Before you feel cheated when you get it, remember that this material gathered here with great insight and love by his grandson was actually stored away in trunks by the great man himself who was meticulous about documenting his own career from the very beginning. It is a treasure trove of memorabilia and letters and thoughts from Fields himself. It is not an Autobiography in the strictest sense of the word, but perhaps better because it gives you the unadulterated material the great man would have used himself to write one.

I always recommend this book and 'The Man On The Flying Trapeze' by Simon Louvish as the definitive duo in giving you a clear look at the man. Mr. Louvish took great care in his research knowing that Fields himself knew how to spin a tale to his advantage throughout his career and sorts fact from fiction.

I highly recommend both. One for giving Fields his own voice on the matter and the other for doing the best possible job of sorting fact from fiction.

Himself Jess Kidd 9781782118459 Books Reviews

This book appears to me to be an effort to publish info not worth publishing working off the great name of the enigma that was W.C. Fields. Very thin in content and disappointing.
An intimate look at the early life of this notable entertainer, including family photographs from his early years in Philadelphia.
Very atmospheric story set in the mystical South/West coast of Ireland.
Enjoyable read and well written.
Excellent insight into Field's personality when offstage.
An essential volume for any true Fields aficionado.
'Himself' doesn't ease you into Mahony's story, his history or his cause. From the start you are suctioned into a whirling dervish of Irishness, mystery, murder, magic realism and fantasy. You know right away this is not going to be an easy ride. The writing flows with originality and spark. Every page sees something twisting and turning the story along Mahony's quest to find his mother, or at least what happened to her. Jess Kidd carves a clever, witty, dark tale with elements of foreboding and also reminders of sections of Irish history no-one could be proud of. What a journey! The village characters are impeccably drawn, complete with foibles, flaws and frailty. Actions of malice, vengeance, hatred and murderous intent live intertwined with innocence, love, desire, loyalty and sometimes sheer madness. 'Himself' is a spirited adventure to kidnap the mind. I won't forget this story in a hurry and I look forward to Jess's next novel. Oh, and I need to mention this is a debut novel - incredible!
Himself is a new favorite. The lyrical writing is delightful, the magical realism fantastic. I have been recommending this book to everyone!
