It All Fun and Games Dave Barrett Books

This book was a lot of fun- definitely appropriate for Middle Grade readers and I think perhaps best suited to them. The LARPing (Live Action Role Playing) was portrayed lovingly, with Allison to act as the voice of the reader who was perhaps less familiar with the community. I appreciated how much Dave Barrett immersed us in this somewhat foreign world. The introduction of Allison to the LARPing world was done perfectly so as to instruct the character as well as the reader, so all of us felt prepared when we set out on our journey.

I wish the shift into the fantasy land had been a little more subtle, as it was glaringly obvious as soon as it happened. I was genuinely surprised by how dark the book got considering that it felt aimed at a Middle Grade reader. The action sequences are written well, you definitely get caught up in the fighting. I also love how Barrett uses the melding of the kids and their characters to propel them forward into the world and their places. My only quibble was that I didn’t feel anchored in the characters enough before we began, so I really only remembered who Simon, TJ and Allison started out as.

The perspective switching felt like a real homage to epic fantasy, like Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones. If you are an adult that has loved that type of book, this book might be a good way to get a young reader in your world.
I hope there is a sequel in the works as it seems like Barrett and the characters are only getting started.

I received this book for free from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

It All Fun and Games Dave Barrett Books Reviews

Thanks to NetGalley and Inkshares for the opportunity to read and review It's All Fun and Games by Dave Barrett. The prologue reveals an archer shooting at a group of friends. At first, it seems like a prank until they see that their friend is badly injured. Chapter One opens with teenagers planning a weekend trip to the woods for some LARPing- live action role-playing- and when they arrive in the woods, their roles are set out for them. They head out for their adventure and everything seems as it should be, for a while. The group meets other players at set stations and are given points, powers, caution and advice. Eventually, their roles, powers and enemies become real and they fall into danger. The commoners, thieves and creatures are real and so is the danger and violence. They have to rely on each other to survive. This unique book with a LARPing concept is fun, creative and original; 4 stars for a survival adventure wrapped up in a fantasy setting!
It’s All Fun and Games by Dave Barrett was a thrilling adventure. While I have never played any tabletop games, I have played various social games and had the pleasure of roleplaying in those games. So I am a bit of a geek/nerd/dork, whatever you want to call it, it probably applies to me! So when I saw the premise of It’s All Fun and Games, I was interested to see where this book could go and I was not disappointed.

This is a crossover between tabletop game nerd and renaissance faire. All in all, I am glad that I had uninterrupted time while on the plane to start and finish this book. It was an extremely easy read and my only regret was that it finished with a sizable cliffhanger that I can only hope will be wrapped up in a sequel. Imagine if you and your friends decided to go off for a weekend and act in character at a renaissance faire. Imagine if during this faire, each of your characters had different powers and abilities and if you had a quest to complete. Now further imagine, if while doing this quest you were suddenly sucked into a place where you were actually the characters and the world that you inhabited was no longer your own and every action you take may have very real ramifications. This is the story of Allison, TJ, and his LARP (Live-Action Roleplay) group who find a weekend of fun suddenly has become real.

If you enjoy action, adventure, LARP, RP (Roleplay), or any combination of the above, this is definitely the book for you. Just make sure you give yourself uninterrupted time because it is hard to place down. I am giving this 5/5 swords for a fantastic story idea that kept me captured from start to finish.

I am not normally much of a reader, but this book made it hard to put it down. It was one of those stories that makes you feel like you are on an adventure with your friends. The ending came too quick and I can't wait for the next one to come out.
Fun story, hoping this is the beginning of a series - we need more!
True to it's title, a fun book. It's well written, and flows very well. The plot is classic Fantasy with a few improbable transitions, but the characters are well done, and made you want to know what happened to them. I'm looking for the sequel!
Dave Barrett's premier release is an epic hors d'oeuvre-like introduction to a role-playing reader's medieval feast. Here the colorful characters, our dining companions, become fast friends inviting us along on a daring tale with twists, turns and tell it like it is details.   Warning  leaves one hungry for more.
Grab your sword or spells and join in the adventure!
Like a day in deep winter, it gets dark fast. Surprisingly dark for an MG/YA novel. Personally, I thrive on darkness so this was a good thing for me. The details are excellent and scintillating. The plot chugs along at a good pace.
My favorite things about the book are the characters and their development. I wish the pacing was a little slower in some areas so I could get to know them better, but by the end of the book, some of the characters and the character relationships had grown complex. It definitely made me want to read more in the series to see how the characters further develop, how their powers and skills evolve, and how they figure out what's going on in the new world (and hopefully find a way home).
